Wednesday 24th May

Dreich, perfect scottish word for a dull and damp day. The eagle at the nest was in the tree. The mist was low but the light through on the sea was gorgeous. Lots of common seals, common gulls, common terns. All common in name but not common in numbers. a very brief otter in the distance. A welcome cuppa and short eared owls. sitting on posts and flying, lovely. Red deer on the hills. In the mountains it was very poor visibility. A cuckoo in the top of a tree calling. Little treats of whitethroat, whinchat and stonechat as we drove. Another short eared owl on a post very close.  Lunch looking for otters. There was someone on the shore so we didnt expect to see anything. Red breasted merganser, male hen harrier and eider ducks. meadow pipits everywhere. Once we had finished lunch we carried on looking for otters. a perfect sea but struggled to see one. then a shout from the back of otter. everyone got a view before it vanished. Back in the hills and a lovely male hen harrier. a stonechat sitting proud on top of a bush as if to say look at me. We headed off through the woodland for a cuppa and cake. A rare treat of a snipe drumming in the sky. Lovely group of butterwort flowering in the damp. Quick stop on the way back and fairly quiet as the weather closed in. not a great day for eagles but certainly a great day for wildlife. Jacqui
