Cluaran (Thistle) Cottage

Our cottage is open all year and ready to welcome you.

From Now until the end of mid March the cottage is less booked which makes it more flexible to book for part weeks and last minute breaks. We usually just need a couple of days notice.

When to come We are often asked when is the best time to come. Anytime of year as the changing seasons bring their own special moments.

This time of year can be great for wildlife especially Eagle and otter watching. The days are shorter so birds have less time to feed, the Winter visitors are here from the north and East. Currently there are large numbers of thrushes such as redwing, fieldfare and Mistle. Snow buntings are about just now and winter ducks.

This can be a showery time of year which is great for seeing the larger birds such as eagles and hen Harrier as the shower passes they fly to dry off their wings.

There are lots of lovely walks and dark skies with the possibility of an aurora on a clear night. We have the milky way right over the cottage stunning to see.

There are less places open to eat and the boat trips are finished but the Salen hotel is open for food and there are places in Tobermory and Craignure.

As we get into Spring and Summer the Eagles are busy rearing their chicks. The Island has a buzz about it with the Summer birds coming back to breed. Boat trips are available to whale watch and visit the Treshnish Isles for the Puffins.

The weather can be interesting at any time of year but often All the shops, restaurants are open and there is a buzz of wildlife watchers on the Island. If wildlife isn't your thing then June is the time to see the wildflowers, and of course the scenary.
