Thursday 18th May

Our day started showery but soon turned out fine and sunny. Aros bay gave us a good variety of birds including, goosander and merganser, heron, greylag geese with goslings, great northern diver and curlew. The nesting eagles were around and we watched the female fly around the nest and sit in a tree. Oystercatcher and common seals. pied wagtail and canada geese were added to our list. Cuppa stop and distant possible eagle. Buzzard and willow warbler calling behind. Red deer on the hill. Close red deer on the way the hills. Male hen harrier flying so we found a parking place and managed to get a view before it disappeared. Scanning round and another male hen harrier on a hillock. Lunch stop was fairly quiet, meadow pipits everywhere. Mallard and common sand piper. Back in the hills and a large group of red deer in amongst rocks, we heard a call of a white tailed eagle and watched as it dropped down towards the deer. A raven and peregrine were mobbing the eagle. quite a sight. The eagle dropped to the rocks so I put the scope on it. there was another sitting close by. Another male hen harrier in the hills and a cuppa and cake. as we had hands full we heard a call of a white tailed eagle. we followed where it might be and spotted two in the distance. they came across closed. one went behind the hill while the other flew across the front of the hill to give us fantastic views. Our last couple of stops were fairly quiet. with more red deer and greater black backed gull to add to our count.
