Friday May 5th

Some like it hot. The day was forecast to be warm, meeting the 9.35 ferry at Craignure was good because we had a good start to the day while it was still cool. First stop was the white tailed eagle nest, all quiet today. hopefully the eggs have now hatched. Common seal, ringed plover, common gull and great northern diver were some of the birds seen. We went on the hunt for white tailed eagles, taking a slight detour. One seen on a distant hill. too far to see well. Shellduck, lapwing, canada and greylag geese. Cuppa and a hen harrier, buzzards and red deer. Wren and willow warbler singing close by. Heading for our walk we saw a red deer in the field, strange behaviour. there was a stag sitting happily but close to it was a hind, looked like it was in the river. It jumped up, danced about and lept out ran across the field over the fence just behind us and ran down the road next to us,it looked frightened but no idea why. Meanwhile the stag sat and chewed. Our little friend was still there on our walk. The tree pipit was around the same area still looking for love. cuckoo calling and a golden eagle over the hill. This disappeared and a white tailed eagle flew. A plane came over the area where they were so they vanished. Lunch sitting on a rock on on the shore of loch scridain. lovely. Otters spotted further on so we packed up to move closer. nothing at first they seemed to have gone. we kept watching. there was a skylark displaying above us it flew down to land on the road nearby. Otter spotted on a bit of seaweed. we could see it eating a fish. I put the scope on it to get an even better view. we saw it move back in the water and watched for a while till it disappeared. Eider ducks and red breasted merganser, mallard enjoying the sun. Other highlights of our day, Golden eagle over the hills in the afternoon, then a white tailed eagle, stone chat, Curlew and  hen harriers chasing a buzzard.   Oh and a couple of very small clouds.
